Why Is It Okay To Give Babies Yogurt at 8 Months But Not Whole Milk?

Date: February 17, 2021
Author:Yasmina Dakik Ahmad, Certified Pediatric Nutritionist

Breast milk and formula contains more nutrient than whole milk has to offer. giving whole milk to your infant can alter the nutritional needs that he/she needs and makes the child feel fuller due to the high content of complex protein in it.

Several studies surfaced showing that whole milk can actually lead to iron-deficiency anaemia because it is lower in Iron first, and can also cause a microscopic Gastrointestinal bleeding due to the irritation caused in the stomach lining. this bleeding typically resolve once baby is 12 months old.

AAP and WHO recommends to introduce everything before the age of 12 months, due to that fact, it is advised to start with greek yogurt at 8 months old. Greek yogurt is easily digestible due to the fermentation process and is normally consumed with other ingredients so the quantity tends to be smaller.

Treat Greek yogurt as any other new ingredient: 3 to 4 days without introduction of other new food.
